Well, I finally have sometime to actually write something. Given our auspicious start here on the cruise we have finally decided to leave the bergs called C18B and head to the next target of poking and prodding, a berg called B151. this berg is supposed to be in Iron limited waters and is supposed to be a decent sized one. of course being in iron rich waters (as of this writing, yesterday for this paragraph) we have to steam about 30hrs (at an oh so speedy 11 knots. set the cruise control and go!) to get to this berg. this means the science folks have some what of a break from the chaos of what was the iceberg C18B.
I guess the decision to blow this taco joint was prompted and made by a storm that is bearing down across the drake and staring us down. this storm is quite impressive. on the satellite images, it looks like a perfect hurricane, complete with eye and spiral. of course, we made sure everything that is movable was stowed, secured, or put on the ground. we did one last surface mapping of the local area and started steaming towards B151 at 4 am this morning. now that we are on our way, we feel a little bit better at having a tail wind to help us get out of the storm's way. but then again, after checking the sat images for weather, it looks like the storm is veering towards the peninsula and palmer station. good for us. either way, we're heading out into the open ocean, hoping for good weather, sunshine, and more interesting biology. we're started a saturday night soirée, hosted by a different group, very saturday night. sort of way to break down a long cruise. all of us hasn't been on a boat for 40 days before, so in an effort to break up the monotony and infuse some fun, Maria started the saturday night soiree. we just hosted our and apparently it was good. folks were talking about it the next day. yay! i'm looking forward to the next one. it'll going to be a double header....a birthday and a soiree!
till next time!
